Set Out on a Medieval Quest . . .
It’s
time to get acquainted with the knights and kings, rascals and ruffians
who were the movers and shakers of the medieval age. Meander through
Rome and early Britain, stand with the Jews at Masada, and travel to the
Far East. Watch as the Vikings head out to raid villages; see the
Crusaders head for faraway lands; and witness the unfolding of the
Renaissance. You’ll get to meet some of the larger than life characters
that are a part of world history: the Apostle Paul, Charlemagne, Joan of
Arc, Marco Polo, Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun, William Wallace, Johannes
Gutenberg, Botticelli, Michelangelo, and John Hus.
As always, you’ll receive a number of wonderful titles and kits that
will accent your study with activities and learning projects. You can
devise a da Vinci-type invention, illustrate an illuminated book, make a
sundial, play the Viking pastime Hnefatafl , and create your own coat of
arms. You can even learn how medieval carpenters used 13-knot ropes to
create beautiful arches and other forms as they built. Plus, you’ll go
up-close to advances made by Renaissance painters as they found new ways
to interpret perspective and draw the human figure. The journey is a
fantastic experience!
If you’d like, you can add one of our “Human Body and Forensics” science
programs, which allow you to delve into the human body, a study that
inspired the work of Leonardo da Vinci himself. To add even more
interest, these studies allow students to enter the world of forensic
science, investigating clues and solving cases with lab work.

How Does this Multi-Level Program Work?
If you have one student to school, simply choose the correct grade level,
and this program works like any other program. But additionally, if
you have students of several age groups -- middle grade together with
junior or senior high -- you can keep your family together with this
program. Students using both sets will share their history books and
adventure reading, so you can complete these together as a family. Website
and DVD suggestions often overlap, and notebooking, mapping and timeline
building also share some common material. Then, students in separate
age groups will break off to complete work from their respective resources
and activities sets. Much of this work will be independent study. It’s
a great way to keep your family creating memories together!

4/6 Program for Middle Grade Students -
Activities and Projects from Medieval Cultures
Middlers will really want to “dig” into this year’s
materials, as they will build, create, fight, and dig their way through
Medieval History. Active learning opportunities will keep them involved
and asking for more. Don’t be surprised if your older students
want to join in with some of the fun! Middle grade students will delve
into the world of knights, produce their castle, discover illuminated
lettering and chain mail armor, design a coat of arms, travel along
with the Vikings and learn about powerful medieval trading leagues!

Jr/Sr
Program for Junior & Senior High - Investigations & Inquiries
into Medieval Life
Junior High Program: For 7th & 8th grades
Senior High Program: Includes more resources for 9th-12th grades
Whether you are researching an autopsy on a Black Death victim or experimenting
with a sundial in your hand, the learning is engrossing and riddled
with investigations older students will actually want to pursue! They’ll
investigate the facts, come up with creative designs, or develop projects
that are of interest to them personally. During the year they’ll
discover the feudal system employed by European countries to manage
emerging countries, and witness the birth of the Renaissance, following
its art and the patrons who made it possible. They’ll uncover
the incredible mind of Leonardo da Vinci and explore his techniques
in drawing and painting, while also learning about the ideas that were
centuries ahead of their actual development. Then they’ll journey
through the geography of the medieval world, following the rise and
fall of kingdoms both barbaric and benevolent. Students of both ages
will enjoy discussing parts of the program aloud and working independently
as well.

and the adventure reading in common, so you will complete these together
as a family. Then, they’ll break off to complete the resources
and activities included in their respective sets. Much of this work
is independent, especially for junior and senior high students.

Mapping and Timeline Resources
With WinterPromise, each year's program has mapping assignments that
require the use of a good world history atlas. A world history atlas has
maps that are both historical (i.e., Asia during the rise of the Mongols)
and topical (i.e., showing the spread of Islam or the rise of European
commercial empires). We offer The Atlas of World History, which will give
you enough historical material to last for many years. We also have
timeline assignments throughout the year, which help students get to know
the flow of history by recording dates and events into a timeline book.
The specific resources you will need throughout the year are listed below.
Atlas of World History
This atlas provides a wealth of maps -- 450 of them -- and is divided into
five parts: The Ancient World, The Medieval World, The Early Modern World,
The Age of Revolutions, and The Twentieth Century. Each section opens with
an introduction that highlights the main themes of the period, while text
explains each of the maps and puts them in historical context. At over 300
pages, this atlas is comprehensive. Its colored maps are easy to read and
international in nature. This book will be a valuable part of your
family's library and aid their schoolwork for years to come.
Old World Style Map Set
These amazingly beautiful maps are fully reproducible within your
family, so you can make as many copies as you need to complete the mapping
assignments in your Guidebook. The photocopy rights make this a one-time
purchase for your entire family for all of your homeschooling years.
Old World Style "Timelines in History"
Our unique timeline resource, "Timelines in History", acts as the
"spine" into which all the other notebooking resources are kept and filed.
It is printed on heavy-duty cardstock and should last a student throughout
their school years. It provides the place to add timeline figures, maps,
"Make-Your-Own" history pages, artwork, reports and more to literally make
their own history book that will serve as a scrapbook of homeschool
memories they'll never want to part with. You will need one per student,
which will last for their entire homeschooling experience.
Resurrection to Revolution Timeline Figures
These reproducible timeline figures by Homeschool in the Woods
coincide with Quest for the Middle Ages. A schedule in your Guidebook lets
you know which figures to place each week to add color and flavor to your
"Timelines in History". Using timeline figures also helps your student to
review the important people and events they have studied that week. Since
they can be photocopied for use within your family, you will only need one
per family.

Frequently
Asked Questions Regarding this Program
I
have several students to school, and one or more of them is younger
than 4th grade -- will this work for my family?
This program is designed to work perfectly with multiple
students. You will, though, need to plan on some adjustment if you are
trying to integrate a younger student. If most of your students fit
the recommended target ages for Middle Ages (grades 4 and above), it
should work fine for you to add a student on who is younger to simplify
things for your family. You should be aware that there will be some
resources that your younger student might have trouble understanding.
We’d recommend that you incorporate him or her into family studies
that are of interest to his or her age group, and find extra resources
that are on the easier side, as needed, perhaps from the library. However,
if most of your students are younger than the targeted ages, and/or
your oldest student is at the younger end of the targeted age range,
you may be better suited by starting with one of our younger programs.
Should I add the Human Body and Forensics Program for my student?
This science program is a great choice as an addition to the Middle
Ages program. The amount of material in this program is kept easy to
complete so that it balances nicely with the material in Middle Ages.
This program integrates well into the study because it shares several
key touchpoints with this period in history. Key advances in medicine
took off during the Middle Ages as doctors sought frantically for a cure
to the dreaded Black Death. The Renaissance saw a new interest in
further developing medical treatments and techniques, and Leonardo da
Vinci furthered his art by a study of human anatomy.
I’ve already got a few of the items
in the package. Can I still get the package price and leave them out?
We love to offer our package prices to our parents to
help them purchase a great program with a great discount. We do, however,
have to sell all the items in the package in order to honor the discount.
Usually the discount outweighs the value of the resources you might
already have. If not, you can choose items individually to build your
program, but remember -- the purchase of a themed program package ensures
you also get free shipping, another discount you’ll want to take
into account as you look at your total purchase. You may want to consider
selling used the items you already own, reselling the new items, giving
away the duplicates as gifts, or donating them to a homeschool resource
center that serves other homeschool families.
How do the Language Arts coordinate with
this program?
We have several language arts programs that coordinate
with our “Middle Ages” program. One of the wonderful features
of our LA guides is that they are hole-punched on the right side so
they will lie directly across from your themed guide so you can see
your week at a glance. “LA 4,” “LA 5,” and “LA
6” share a reading list recommended for 9-12 year olds to enable
students to experience comfortable reading growth. “LA 7”
and higher all have a literature set that coordinates with the Medieval
topics students are encountering, and includes interactive discussion
topics that parents can join in and give feedback on. Often the discussion
topics do not require firsthand reading on the parent’s part,
but can be discussed generally due to its coverage of typical literary
devices, or discussed easily with a quick look at a specific passage
the student points out. For most of the language arts grade levels,
creative writing for students follows the goals of their grade level
program, yet draws its subjects from medieval topics covered in your
main study. You can link to any of these programs in the section above
these questions.
