Embark
on a Medieval Quest ...
It’s
time to get acquainted with the knights and kings, rascals and ruffians
who were the movers and shakers of the medieval age. Meander through
Rome and early Britain, stand with the Jews at Masada, and travel to
the Far East. Watch as the Vikings head out to raid villages; see the
Crusaders head for faraway lands; and witness the unfolding of the Renaissance.
You’ll get to meet some of the larger than life characters that
are a part of world history: Charlemagne, Joan of Arc, Marco Polo, Genghis
Khan, Attila the Hun, J. Gutenberg, the Apostle Paul, Michelangelo,
and William Wallace.
With the optional science program, you can delve into the human body,
a study that integrates well with the Middle Ages because it has several key
touchpoints with this period in history. Key advances in medicine took
off during the Middle Ages as doctors sought frantically for a cure
to the dreaded Black Death. The Renaissance saw a new interest in further
developing medical treatments and techniques, and Leonardo da Vinci
furthered his art by a study of human anatomy. To add even more interest,
you’ll enter the world of forensic science, investigating clues
and solving cases with lab work.
You’ll be taking a journey that many parents declare is one of
their best years of homeschooling yet! And -- yes, this set is more
expensive than some of our other sets, but we think you’ll find
it’s well worth the money you’ll invest. The reason for
the price difference is simple -- the topic of medieval history is huge!
To really understand the different cultures and events this year, you’ll
need many different resources. As always, you’ll receive a number
of wonderful titles that will accent your study with activities and
learning projects. And, we’ve kept the number of consumable resources
low, so the value increases as you school multiple students.

How Does this Multi-Level Program Work?
If you have one student to school, simply choose the correct grade level,
and this program works like any other program. But additionally, if
you have students of several age groups -- middle grade together with
junior or senior high -- you can keep your family together with this
program. Students using both sets will share their history books and
adventure reading, so you can complete these together as a family. Website
and DVD suggestions often overlap, and notebooking, mapping and timeline
building also share some common material. Then, students in separate
age groups will break off to complete work from their respective resources
and activities sets. Much of this work will be independent study. It’s
a great way to keep your family creating memories together!

4/6 Program for Middle Grade Students -
Activities and Projects from Medieval Cultures
Middlers will really want to “dig” into this year’s
materials, as they will build, create, fight, and dig their way through
Medieval History. Active learning opportunities will keep them involved
and asking for more. Don’t be surprised if your older students
want to join in with some of the fun! Middle grade students will delve
into the world of knights, produce their castle, discover illuminated
lettering and chain mail armor, design a coat of arms, travel along
with the Vikings and learn about powerful medieval trading leagues!

Jr/Sr
Program for Junior & Senior High - Investigations & Inquiries
into Medieval Life
Junior High Program: For 7th & 8th grades
Senior High Program: Includes more resources for 9th-12th grades
Whether you are researching an autopsy on a Black Death victim or experimenting
with a sundial in your hand, the learning is engrossing and riddled
with investigations older students will actually want to pursue! They’ll
investigate the facts, come up with creative designs, or develop projects
that are of interest to them personally. During the year they’ll
discover the feudal system employed by European countries to manage
emerging countries, and witness the birth of the Renaissance, following
its art and the patrons who made it possible. They’ll uncover
the incredible mind of Leonardo da Vinci and explore his techniques
in drawing and painting, while also learning about the ideas that were
centuries ahead of their actual development. Then they’ll journey
through the geography of the medieval world, following the rise and
fall of kingdoms both barbaric and benevolent. Students of both ages
will enjoy discussing parts of the program aloud and working independently
as well. Both sets include additional in-depth history and science study
books. Senior High students add one more great research title in New
Testament history to complete this program. The optional science program
allows students to delve into the design of the human body and learn
about forensic techniques. This science program is quite comprehensive,
especially for junior high students. *We do recommend an accredited science program or text such as Apologia
be added for Senior High students seeking a full science credit.

All-Inclusive Program - A Program for Teaching
a Middler and a Junior or Senior High Student
You’ve got one of each, so this is the set for you! It includes
one of every resource in both sets, plus both guidebooks, and two “Make-Your-Own”
Medieval History books. Your students have the sixteen history books
and the adventure reading in common, so you will complete these together
as a family. Then, they’ll break off to complete the resources
and activities included in their respective sets. Much of this work
is independent, especially for junior and senior high students. If your
older student is a senior high student, you’ll need to add WS2-J08
to complete their program with this set.

Atlas
of the Past: Medieval World | WS2-X01 | $25
This
atlas presents a good geographical picture of the rise of different
kingdoms during the Middle Ages. This, or another similar resource is
necessary for the completion of various mapping activities, and for
overall understanding of geography in this period. Because it is used
throughout the year, this title is recommended for purchase.
Building Series by David Macauley
This series presents the planning and construction of
a Roman city, a medieval castle, a sixteenth-century
mosque, and a French cathedral. Techniques are highlighted in finely
detailed drawings. Each of these is used for
just a few weeks, and are often readily available in libraries, and
thus, even though they are necessary, we have not
included them in the package. Nevertheless, these books show so much
about the time period’s architecture and
construction, they would be valuable and popular choices for your personal
library!

Frequently
Asked Questions Regarding this Program
I
have several students to school, and one or more of them is younger
than 4th grade -- will this work for my family?
This program is designed to work perfectly with multiple
students. You will, though, need to plan on some adjustment if you are
trying to integrate a younger student. If most of your students fit
the recommended target ages for Middle Ages (grades 4 and above), it
should work fine for you to add a student on who is younger to simplify
things for your family. You should be aware that there will be some
resources that your younger student might have trouble understanding.
We’d recommend that you incorporate him or her into family studies
that are of interest to his or her age group, and find extra resources
that are on the easier side, as needed, perhaps from the library. However,
if most of your students are younger than the targeted ages, and/or
your oldest student is at the younger end of the targeted age range,
you may be better suited by starting with one of our younger programs.
How much science is in this program? Should
I do a separate science program?
If you are adding the optional integrated science program
to this program, there is enough science here for students in 4th through
8th grade. Without this program you’d need to add a different
science program. This program integrates well into the study because
it has several key touchpoints with this period in history. Key advances
in medicine took off during the Middle Ages as doctors sought frantically
for a cure to the dreaded Black Death. The Renaissance saw a new interest
in further developing medical treatments and techniques, and Leonardo
da Vinci furthered his art by a study of human anatomy. For students
in 9-12th grade, our recommendation would definitely be to complete
another accredited high school science program with the Middle Ages
program.
I’ve already got a few of the items
in the package. Can I still get the package price and leave them out?
We love to offer our package prices to our parents to
help them purchase a great program with a great discount. We do, however,
have to sell all the items in the package in order to honor the discount.
Usually the discount outweighs the value of the resources you might
already have. If not, you can choose items individually to build your
program, but remember -- the purchase of a themed program package ensures
you also get free shipping, another discount you’ll want to take
into account as you look at your total purchase. You may want to consider
selling used the items you already own, reselling the new items, giving
away the duplicates as gifts, or donating them to a homeschool resource
center that serves other homeschool families.
How do the Language Arts coordinate with
this program?
We have several language arts programs that coordinate
with our “Middle Ages” program. One of the wonderful features
of our LA guides is that they are hole-punched on the right side so
they will lie directly across from your themed guide so you can see
your week at a glance. “LA 4,” “LA 5,” and “LA
6” share a reading list recommended for 9-12 year olds to enable
students to experience comfortable reading growth. “LA 7”
and higher all have a literature set that coordinates with the Medieval
topics students are encountering, and includes interactive discussion
topics that parents can join in and give feedback on. Often the discussion
topics do not require firsthand reading on the parent’s part,
but can be discussed generally due to its coverage of typical literary
devices, or discussed easily with a quick look at a specific passage
the student points out. For most of the language arts grade levels,
creative writing for students follows the goals of their grade level
program, yet draws its subjects from medieval topics covered in your
main study. You can link to any of these programs in the section above
these questions.
