The Language Arts High
School Language and Literature 1 program provides in-depth instruction
on devising descriptive text that sets the scene in their creative
writing. Students will learn to develop an engrossing, believable
setting in their creative writing and practice extending that skill
throughout the year. Assignments get students involved because they are
challenging and often fun or interesting. An example is to make a short
list of ten or so details or items that you might include in a good
description of a busy city street or a trip to a ski slope. Another
example is to develop several different settings for an interesting
story idea such as a tale of espionage in a hotel -- will it be a
dilapidated country inn, a bustling modern hotel, or a foreboding
establishment rumored to hide dark secrets? These assignments engage the
student because they start with something with which they are familiar,
and help them to develop ideas in a challenging way.
HS 1 also involves the student in mastery of the English language, using
vocabulary to fully express meaning in their writing. The resource,
"Intriguing Word Choices" will teach them how to use words to "flesh
out" a description or character, to enrich settings with texture and
flavor, and to capture the interest of the reader with key vocabulary
choices. They’ll continue to enjoy getting "caught" in their grammar
studies.
The HS 1 program includes the resources listed below, and a guidebook
that offers creative writing & reading to coordinate with several themed
programs. It also offers your choice of several literature sets, so
you'll want to choose the set that includes the themed literature that
coordinates with your themed program. Be sure to look for these sets at
