Set Out on a Quest to Foreign Lands ...

Did you ever wonder when the people in the Bible lived, and what other things were going on in the world at the time they did things for God? This year, you’ll find out who was ruling Egypt when Esther became a queen. You’ll learn about the Roman rulers that influenced the world when Christ was born. Books like “The Mystery of History” include dozens of activity suggestions.

You’ll meet historical giants like Hannibal, Cleopatra, and Rameses the Great. You will dig through King Tut’s tomb, clash swords alongside faithful warriors and open up the Trojan horse. Adventure awaits at every turn! But the excitement doesn’t stop there. As you read out loud together, you’ll untangle a mystery in a goldsmith’s shop or run for your life with an escaping pharaoh who has lost his throne to an adversary.

To add to your study, we’ve added science resources that introduce your student to archaeology and the “technology” of the ancient world. Active learning opportunities are laced throughout the program, in the books we’ve chosen, and in our guidebooks.

Take a Look at Features You’ll Love in Your Program Guide!

How Does this Multi-Level Program Work?

If you have one student to school, simply choose the correct grade level, and this program works like any other program. But additionally, if you have students of several age groups -- middle grade together with junior or senior high -- you can keep your family together with this program. Students using both sets will share their history books and adventure reading, so you can complete these together as a family. Website and DVD suggestions often overlap, and notebooking, mapping and timeline building also share some common material. Then, students in separate age groups will break off to complete work from their respective resources and activities sets. Much of this work will be independent study. It’s a great way to keep your family creating memories together!

4/6 Program for Middle Grade Students - Activities and Projects from Ancient Cultures
Middlers will really want to “dig” into this year’s materials, as they will build, create, fight, and dig their way through Ancient History. Active learning opportunities will keep them involved and asking for more. Don’t be surprised if your older students want to join in with some of the fun! Middle grade students will delve into hieroglyphics, produce their own “mummy,” discover archaeological techniques, design a Jewish home, listen to Greek heroes and learn gladiator fighting techniques! Jr/Sr Program for Junior & Senior High - Investigations & Inquiries into Ancient Life
Junior High Program: For 7th & 8th grade
Senior High Program: Includes two extra resources for 9-12th grade

Whether you are researching the routes of ancient traders or experimenting with a water clock, the learning is engrossing and riddled with investigations older students will actually want to pursue! They’ll investigate the facts, come up with creative designs, or develop projects that are of interest to them personally. During the year they’ll discover tools used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans, like war machines and architectural designs. They’ll uncover the incredible design of the universe and how it all began. Then they’ll journey through the geography of the ancient world that surrounded the Israelites and discover how world history developed around this ancient culture. Students of both ages will enjoy discussing parts of the program aloud and working independently as well. Both sets include additional in-depth history and science study books. Senior High students add two more great research and reading titles to complete their program, although *we do recommend an accredited science program such as Apologia be added for Senior High students seeking a full science credit. A special emphasis on ancient world geography is included in the Jr/Sr program and guide. Click here to see a sample of this program guide.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding this Program

I have several students to school, and one or more of them is younger than 4th grade -- will this work for me?
This program is designed to work perfectly with multiple students. You will, though, need to plan on some
adjustment if you are trying to integrate a younger student. If most of your students fit the recommended target ages for Ancient World (grades 4 and above), it should work fine for you to add a student on who is younger to simplify things for your family. You should be aware that there will be some resources that your younger student might have trouble understanding. We’d recommend that you incorporate him or her into family studies that are of interest to his or her age group, and find extra resources on Egypt, Israel, Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome that are on the easier side, as needed, perhaps from the library. However, if most of your students are younger than the targeted ages, and/or your oldest student is at the younger end of the targeted age range, you may be better suited by starting with one of our younger programs.

How much science is in this program? Should I do a separate science program?
This program does include a few science resources for each group, however, for this program we feel another science program with an easy-to-complete approach would be a good complement for students grades 4-8. There is quite a bit of science sprinkled along the way in some of the research in the history resources, and then with additional science resources, it rounds out quite well. Still, most parents would find a little more science is a great accompaniment for the Ancient program. For grades 4-6, some parents find a science co-op one day a week fits the bill, while others find that our WinterPromise science programs are designed to be a great complement to the extensive nature of our themed programs. You may find that choosing a science program designed for a slightly younger student will leave you with the right amount of science to complement Ancient World. For students in 9-12th grade, our recommendation would definitely be to complete another accredited high school science program with the Ancient World program.

I’ve already got a few of the items in the package. Can I still get the package price and leave them out?
We love to offer our package prices to our parents to help them purchase a great program with a great discount. We do, however, have to sell all the items in the package in order to honor the discount. Usually the discount outweighs the value of the resources you might already have. If not, you can choose items individually to build your program, but remember -- the purchase of a themed program package ensures you also get free shipping, another discount you’ll want to take into account as you look at your total purchase. You may want to consider selling used the items you already own, reselling the new items, giving away the duplicates as gifts, or donating them to a homeschool resource center that serves other homeschool families.

How do the Language Arts coordinate with this program?
We have several language arts programs that coordinate with our “Ancient World” program. One of the wonderful features of our LA guides is that they are hole-punched on the right side so they will lay directly across from your themed guide so you can see your week at a glance. “LA 4,” “LA 5,” and “LA 6” share a reading list recommended for 9-12 year olds to enable students to experience comfortable reading growth. “LA 7” and higher all have a literature set that coordinates with the Ancient topics students are encountering, and includes interactive discussion topics that parents can join in and give feedback on. Often the discussion topics do not require firsthand reading on the parent’s part, but can be discussed generally due to its coverage of typical literary devices, or discussed easily with a quick look at a specific passage the student points out. For most of the language arts grade levels, creative writing for students follows the goals of their grade level program, yet draws its subjects from Ancient topics covered in your main study. You can link to any of these program in the section above these questions.
